Citizens Electric Achieves Certified Market Participation
Perryville, Missouri (September 29, 2025) — As of September 25, Citizens Electric Corporation officially achieved certified market participation within Midwest Independent System Operator (MISO). An achievement toward maintaining the Corporation’s mission in providing safe, reliable, and affordable electricity.
Certified market participation within MISO means that Citizens Electric Corporation can now directly engage within its regional energy markets, improving local control, enhancing flexibility and enabling the Corporation’s ability to more directly manage costs and resources on behalf of its members.
“I am pleased to announce that our team has successfully achieved certification as a Market Participant in the MISO market,” said Jason Cates, Citizens Electric’s Chief Executive Officer. “This certification marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to gain greater control for the Corporation to serve our membership's future energy needs.”
Citizens Electric’s Board President, Derek Miesner added, "This achievement is a reflection of the forward-thinking leadership and technical expertise within the Corporation. Becoming a certified MISO Market Participant not only allows Citizens Electric to be more proactive in managing energy costs and resources but also ensures that we continue delivering reliable service to our members for years to come."
MISO is a non-profit organization and one of the nation’s largest electric power delivery systems. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) developed the independent system operator (ISO) and regional transmission organization (RTO) to independently manage bulk electrical transmission needs on a regional basis. Its primary objectives are to provide open, competitive access to a large regional transmission system, thus facilitating a robust marketplace and enhancing the stability and reliability of the nation’s power grid.
